The Maharashtra Government will fill vacancies under the Maratha quota with immediate effect, benefiting around 3,000 persons from the community, according to state government sources.
The Devendra Fadnavis government had on Thursday issued a notification stating that reservations under the Social and Educational Backward Class (SEBC), which covers the Maratha community, would be with effect from 2014.
The Congress-NCP government had first enacted an ordinance granting 16 per cent reservation for the community ahead of the last Assembly elections in 2014.
This was, however, stayed by the Bombay High Court. The Devendra Fadnavis government, however, introduced reservations for the Marathas under the SEBC category, which passed muster of the court though the original 16 per cent reservation was brought down to 13 per cent in the case of government jobs and 12 per cent in educational institutions.
The state government had begun recruitments in 2014 but with the Maratha quota being struck down, those hired under this category could not be appointed as permanent employees.
“Those from the Maratha community who were hired on contract will now be made permanent. However, contractual services of those hired under the general category may be terminated,” a state government official said. Following the stay on Maratha quota, the state government had hired people in many departments on 11-month contracts, according to sources.
Leaders of the Maratha Kranti Morcha who had held protests for reservation in educational institutions and government jobs have already welcomed this proposal.
Meanwhile, sources in the government say a fresh recruitment drive to fill vacancies in various offices will soon be announced. It will, however, take about a year for the process to be completed.
