An Indian company has won a $100 million (Rs 700 crore) contract from Israel to manufacture kits for 1,000 of the surface-to-air missiles — Barak 8 — which in turn would be supplied to Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for integration.
The Barak is missile used for self-defence on Indian naval warships. It can bring down incoming missiles, drones planes at a distance of 70 km.
Israeli firm Rafael Advanced Systems (not to be mixed up with Rafale fighter jets from France) had signed up Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd to create Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems Ltd, India (KRAS) a 49:51 ratio joint venture.
The partners claim to have invested in best in class production facilities, state of the art engineering services, and extended Life cycle support (MRO) for systems supplied to Indian Defence forces. KRAS is expected to ramp up its employee strength to 300 technical experts by the year 2023.
