New Delhi, July 8
India’s indigenously made seaborne aircraft carrier, the INS Vikrant, is progressing well and will be delivered to the Navy by early 2021.
Trials of fighter jets flying from the deck of the warship will be conducted after that, Vice Admiral AK Saxena, Controller, warship production and acquisition of the Navy, said today, while listing to the timeline of the 40,000-tonne warship.
Vice Admiral Saxena was speaking at the curtain raiser to a seminar ‘Nation Building through Shipbuilding’, which the Navy is organising with FICCI on July 25-26.
He said: “The construction is moving at a brisk pace. The gas turbines could be fired in the third quarter of this year. Basin trials and the testing of the aviation complex will follow.” The carrier is being made by Cochin Shipyard Limited. India operates INS Vikramaditya and the upcoming INS Vikrant will be the second carrier.
Meanwhile, sources said even as India is readying to receive the INS Vikrant in early 2021, China seems to be racing ahead with its own built carrier, so far known as “CV-17 001A” undergoing flying trials, the sixth one being in June. It is Beijing’s second carrier and is set to be inducted much earlier than India’s.
Advisory for army
The Army has issued an advisory asking its officers and troops not to be member of any WhatsApp group that has large number of members whose identities cannot be established. It has also asked that serving personnel should be members of only groups that have serving officers. Sources said the advisory has been issued as some information that needs not be out in public domain is going out, purportedly through WhatsApp groups.
