New Delhi: The ITBP on Monday released a video showing the ‘last moments’ of the eight mountaineers killed on way to the Nanda Devi East Peak in Uttarakhand in May. The 1.55-minute video sends with a minor thud, a sound that the ITBP officials said could be of an avalanche or snow storm that claimed their lives. PTI

Submit report on Ansari lynching: HC to J’khand

Ranchi: The Jharkhand HC on Monday asked the state government to submit a report on the lynching of Tabrez Ansari by a mob in Seraikela-Kharswan district. Hearing a PIL filed by Pankaj Yadav demanding a high- level inquiry into the incident, the division Bench asked the state government to submit an action-taken report on July 17. PTI

SC to take up plea against Maratha quota

New Delhi: The top court on Monday said it would hear on July 12 a plea challenging a Bombay HC verdict upholding the reservation given to candidates belonging to the Maratha community in public employment and educational institutions in Maharashtra. Filed by the Youth for Equality, the appeal against the HC verdict was mentioned before a three-judge Bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi that agreed to take it up on Friday. The HC had on June 27 upheld the validity of quota for Maratha candidates in government jobs and educational institutions. However, it had asked the quantum of quota to be reduced to from 16 per cent to 12-13 per cent. TNS

Top court notice to Talwar in aviation scam 

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to Aditya Talwar, a money-laundering case accused reported to be in Antigua, on Enforcement Directorate's petition challenging a Delhi HC order allowing him to appear through his lawyer before the trial court. Staying the proceedings before the Delhi HC in the matter, a Bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi posted the matter for hearing on July 23. TNS

SC notice on plea for human rights courts

New Delhi: Twenty six years after Parliament enacted the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, mandating setting up of human rights courts in each district of India, a law student has moved the SC seeking direction to the government to take steps to make it a reality. A three-judge Bench on Monday issued notices to the Centre and all states on the petition filed by Bhavika Phore. Citing reports on custodial deaths in India as an indicator of “abuse of power” and “unfathomable torture” undergone by individuals due to police excess, the PIL sought direction to the states to appoint special public prosecutors for conducting speedy trial of offences relating to rights violations within three months.
