Labour code gets nod, 40 cr to benefit

In a big step towards proposed labour reforms by way of converting the existing 44 laws into four labour codes, the Union Cabinet today gave approval for introduction of Code on Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Bill, 2019. It has already approved the Code on Wages, Bill.

“The two Bills will be introduced in Parliament during the current session for enactment into laws/codes,” said Union Labour and Employment Minister Santosh Gangwar. The new code okayed today will benefit 40 crore workers in the unorganised sector, he said.

It aims to enhance the coverage of the safety, health and working conditions provision manifold as compared to the present system. The code embodies an amalgamation and simplification of relevant provisions of the 13 Central Labour Acts. They include the Factories Act, the Contract Labour( Regulation and Abolition) Act, the Working Journalist and other Newspaper Employees ( Conditions of Services and Miscellaneous Provision Act and the Motor Transport Workers Act.
