The Centre’s decision to keep Telangana Chief Minister K Chadrashekhar Rao (KCR) out of the high-powered committee of CMs on agriculture has not gone down well with the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) as the party believes the CM has championed the cause of farmers more than anyone else.

Credited with introducing various schemes for farmers, the TRS has said keeping KCR away from the “elite group” reeks of prejudice.

The Telangana CM introduced the “Rythu Bandhu” scheme, a welfare programe that provides financial help to support farmer’s investment for two crops a year. The scheme has since been replicated by many states and the Centre too has adopted the scheme under the PM Kissan Yojana. “But when it came to acknowledging the contribution of KCR for the cause of farmers, he has been ignored,” party leader Abid Rasool Khan said.

Telangana’s Agriculture Principal Secretary C Parthasarathi said, “No other state has done so much work for the agriculture sector as Telangana. Telangana is among the top states when it comes to market reforms, implementation of the e-Nam system, timely supply of agricultural inputs and subsidies, increasing produce, building storage capacity etc.”

With the presence of Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis at the inauguration of the Kaleshwaram project, it was believed that the TRS chief was patching up with the BJP, the party he opposed in the recent Assembly and Parliamentary elections.

But when Prime Minister Narendra Modi constituted a nine-member committee of CMs, headed by Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, to help transform agriculture by increasing farmers’ income, the name of KCR was conspicuously absent. The panel includes Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, NITI Aayog member Ramesh Chand and CMs of Karnataka, Haryana, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, UP and MP.
