M’rashtra ropes in Israeli experts to fight drought

Mumbai, July 13

The Maharashtra Government has roped in experts from Israel to help prepare a master plan to conserve water in drought-hit Marathwada.

Under the master plan prepared by Mekerot, Israel’s national water utility, all 11 dams in the Marathwada region will be linked together under a looped grid so that water could be moved from dams which have excess water to those which are deficient.

“The plan is to link the biggest dam in the region Jayakwadi with Upper Painganga, Lower Manar, Lower Terna, Siddheshwar, Yeldari, Vishnupuri, Majalgaon, Lower Dudhna, Sina Kolegaon and Manjara dams as part of a water grid,” an official from the state irrigation department said.

Experts from Mekerot who have been camping in the Marathwada region since last year to study the rainfall and water flow patterns apart from the topgraphy of the area have completed their studies, according to officials here.  The government is expected to spend Rs 10,000 crore on the pilot project. — TNS
