The Rajya Sabha today had a taste of the diversity of Indian languages when members sought to speak in Sanskrit, Konkani and Bagehli with Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu observing it is appropriate to replace the term regional languages with Indian languages instead.

During the zero hour, Madhya Pradesh MP Ajay Pratap Singh (BJP) spoke in Bagheli language seeking its inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution listing Scheduled Languages. Chairman Naidu, while appreciating the MP, said the House could not provide its translation since it was not among the 22 scheduled languages.

Goa MP Vinay Dinu Tendulkar (BJP) gave notice to speak in Konkani on the need to resume mining in the state but could not do so as the Konkani interpreter empanelled was not available. He then spoke in Hindi.

During the special mentions that followed the zero hour submissions, former Union Minister Satya Narayan Jatiya (BJP) spoke in Sanskrit about the issues related to education. GVL Narasimha Rao highlighted the need for the government replies to various questions asked by members be made available in their respective mother tongue for wider dissemination.

On the suggestion, Chairman Naidu observed it was worth considering but it would depend on due application of mind with regard to feasibility of providing answers in the mother tongue of the members.

Naidu also observed he was not happy over describing some languages as ‘regional languages’, thereby restricting their use to a particular domain when people speaking different languages live in different parts of the country. Further to some suggestions from the members, he said it was better to describe them ‘Indian languages’.
