Popular Front of India (PFI) leader Asim Sharif will have to face trial in connection with an RSS worker’s murder in Bengaluru in 2016 after the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed his petition seeking dropping of criminal charges against him in the case.

RSS worker Rudresh was hacked to death near Srinivas Medical Stores, Shivajinagar, in Bengaluru on October 16, 2016, at around 12.40 pm, allegedly by Sharif.

A Bench of Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice Ajay Rastogi said, “After going through the records and the judgment impugned before us, in the present facts and circumstances, we find no error in the judgment passed by the trial court and confirmed by the High Court…”

Sharif and four other PFA members were chargesheeted by the NIA on April 21, 2017. Sharif had sought discharge in the case but his plea was rejected on January 2, 2018, by the trial court which framed charges against him and other accused persons.

Special NIA Court had taken note of the fact that it was admitted by the defence counsel that Sharif was the President of Bengaluru unit of PFI and the other accused persons were members of the banned outfit.

The high court dismissed his appeal against the Special NIA Court’s decision on November 22, 2018. Dismissing his appeal against the high court’s verdict, the top court said, “It reveals from the chargesheet that there was frequent mobile conversation between appellant with other accused persons prior and subsequent to 16th October, 2016, which persuaded the court to arrive to a conclusion that there is a prima facie material of conspiracy among the accused persons….”
