Schooling of children from households that are beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin  has improved in terms of enrolment and performance after the plan’s  implementation.

The PMAY-G is a flagship scheme of the Narendra Modi government implemented through Union Ministry of Rural Development. Besides, the scheme has brought transformational (both social and economic) changes among households.

These are among the findings of two studies conducted by a Delhi-based National Institute of Public Finance and Policy and Hyderabad-based  National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj. Details of the findings were made public by Union Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh Tomar in Lok Sabha last week.

There has also been an improvement in the health status of the beneficiaries due to considerable reduction in open defecation post the scheme. Besides, it led to benefits in terms of improvement in dignity and safety that led to a significant improvement in terms of social inclusion.

Under the PMAY-G, implemented in April 2016, beneficiaries are provided unit assistance (construction of one house for a unit family) of Rs 1.2 lakh in plains and Rs 1.3 lakh in hilly and difficult areas. Tomar said they also provided assistance of 90/95 persondays of unskilled labour wages through MGNREGS.
