Shah: UP holds key to $5-tn economy

Union Home Minister Amit Shah today said India would be the third biggest economy in the world in the next five years and the path to achieving the country's target of a $5-trillion economy passes through Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking at the second ground-breaking ceremony for industrial projects worth Rs 65,000 crore here, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken the country’s economy from the 11th to 5th position during the past five years.

“I have heard that the road to becoming prime minister passes through Lucknow. Atalji (Atal Bihari Vajpayee) was from here, and Narendra bhai is also from UP (Modi is MP from Varanasi). Earlier, there were 85 parliamentary seats, now there are 80.

“Today, I want to say, the road to a $5-trillion economy also passes through UP, and I'm sure that the state will contribute to it by becoming a $1-trillion economy,” Shah said.

Complimenting Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Shah said within a short period, he had succeeded to translate dreams into reality. He also congratulated Yogi for improving environment for investment in the state by improving the law and order situation.

"The Yogi government has removed the biggest hurdle in development by improving the law and order situation in the last two years,” he said.

Yogi said the investment of Rs 65,000 crore would create 3 lakh jobs in the state. To bring such a large investment, Yogi claimed to have made concerted efforts to establish connect with capitalists and industrialists.

UP Industrial Development Minister Satish Mahana said of the projects that were announced in the first ground-breaking ceremony in February 2018, all had materialised except two which has faced some policy issues. Lullu Group CMD MA Yusuff Ali said, “We have 174 shopping malls in the country. It has been decided to open a mall in Lucknow.”

PepsiCo India’s Ahmed El Sheikh said the company plans to invest Rs 514 crore in three years to set up a greenfield snacks manufacturing plant in UP.

Eminent cardiologist Dr Naresh Trehan also talked of plans to set up a 700-bed hospital in Noida and Medanta-like institutions in Varanasi and Gorakhpur.

The UPA took over in 2004 and for the next 10 years, the economy remained at the 11th spot globally... but in the last five years, from 11th we jumped to fifth spot. In the next five years, the target is to propel India into the top three ranks. — Amit Shah, Union Home Minister
