New Delhi, July 25

Senior IAS officer Subhash Chandra Garg who was shifted as Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, as part of a bureaucratic shuffle earlier this week, has sought voluntary retirement from the government.

Garg’s transfer as Power Secretary is being interpreted as relegation and is the second time an incumbent Finance Secretary has not found favour with the Modi government. Soon after Modi government was formed in 2014, then Finance Secretary Arvind Mayaram was transferred as Tourism Secretary. Garg was to retire in October next year.

Sources said Garg may have paid the penalty for an indiscretion after the presentation of the Budget that triggered a downward rally on the bourses. Earlier, Garg had battled for the government by asking the RBI to transfer its surplus in one tranche.

The Modi government had given him the coveted post of Executive Director with the World Bank before making him Finance Secretary.

Garg applied for voluntary retirement this morning and will serve the mandatory three-month notice period at his new place of posting. “Handed over charge of Economic Affairs today. Learnt so much in the Finance Ministry and Economic Affairs Dept. Will take charge in Power Ministry tomorrow. Have also applied for voluntary retirement with effect from October 31,” Garg said in a tweet.
