Samajwadi Party MP Neeraj Shekhar resigned as a Rajya Sabha member on Monday. He met Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu who accepted his resignation, sources in the House said. The term of Shekhar, son of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar, was up to November 25, next year. He was apparently upset that the SP had pushed him to the margins. There are reports that Shekhar would join the BJP after resigning from the SP. After his exit, the SP has 12 MPs in the Rajya Sabha. TNS
SAD’s Gujral elected as PAC member
Seven Rajya Sabha members, including Shiromani Akali Dal’s Naresh Gujral, were elected unopposed as members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). Gujral is among 34 MPs elected to four committees. Those elected to the PAC from the House included Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Bhupendra Yadav, CM Ramesh (all of the BJP), MV Rajeev Gowda and Bhubaneswar Kalita (Congress) and Sukhendu Sekhar Ray (AITC) and Naresh Gujral (SAD). The tenure of the committee is up to April 30, 2020. TNS
Discuss powers of 3 wings of govt: Naidu
Appreciating the issue of appointments in higher judiciary raised by BJP member Ashok Bajpai during Zero Hour in the House on Monday, Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said there was need for a discussion on powers and limitations of the three pillars of democracy - judiciary, legislature and executive. Bajpai said there was a need for setting up of All India Judicial Services Examination to fill vacancies in the mid and high levels of judiciary. He said Constitution does not mention the word 'collegium', though it is currently being used for appointments and transfers of judges. TNS
