Mumbai, August 25
Maharashtra’s fleet of state transport buses will soon have a large number of women drivers “manning” the fleet.
The state government handed out appointment letters to 163 women with licences to drive heavy vehicles who would join the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). “The women will be provided training for one year after which they will take to the wheels of our ST buses,” Transport Minister Diwakar Raote said.
The minister said the government had to change recruitment rules to ensure that women were hired as bus drivers. The state government has now set a target to hire 10,000 women drivers in due course. “Everything will depend on this pilot project,” Raote said. — TNS
