New Delhi, August 26
Facing a shortage of house for troops and officers, the Army is working with the Ministry of Defence to allow construction of houses or flats on ‘surplus land’ it has in three major cities of the country.
The Army needs 70,450 dwelling units under the married accommodation project, a major initiative of the ministry to provide quality housing in major Army bases, IAF stations and Naval bases.
The Army is ready to part with its land for construction. Defence land is acquired by the MoD, which further allocates the same to the armed forces for their military, accommodation, training and other purposes.
In this case, the Army has suggested three cities — one in northern India and two in southern part of the country. The project will cost Rs 23,450 crore and the Army has suggested that it will rope in the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) or the public sector companies.
The NBCC auctioned acres of land near New Moti Bagh in Delhi for Rs 650 crore in 2007, the sum was used to make 492 flats for central government officers.
The Army has identified 3.5 acres of land in New Delhi that would be available after it’s restructuring. The same can be sold and monetised. Since the proposal includes the need to monetise defence land, it will have to be okayed by the Ministry of Finance and auditing bodies. Sources said the MoD has sent a detailed project for consideration of the Ministry of Finance.
