BJP: We don’t trust it, go for nationwide list

Guwahati, August 31

The ruling BJP on Saturday said it did not trust the updated NRC, specifically prepared for Assam, and appealed to the party governments at the Centre and the state for a nationwide NRC.

BJP’s Assam president Ranjeet Kumar Dass said the government would bring in a legislation to safeguard Indian citizens if the Foreigners Tribunals delivered adverse rulings against the appeals.

“We do not trust this NRC. We are very unhappy,” he said. The final NRC contains a very small figure of exclusions compared to officially stated figures earlier, he said.

Dass claimed that former Congress CM Hiteswar Saikia had given a figure of 30 lakh foreigners living in Assam during his tenure from 1991-96. “Then Union Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal of the Congress stated that two crore Bangladeshis had entered India and 50 lakh settled in Assam,” he said.

Dass said the party would keep a close watch on the process of appeal by the excluded persons and the judgments of the cases. — PTI
