New Delhi, Aug 9
It was a day of twin setbacks for the Congress Party with its Jharkhand chief resigning alleging corruption in ranks and former Assam party president Bhubaneshwar Kalita joining the BJP here.
Kalita, the chief whip of Congress in Rajya Sabha until last week, resigned from the party on the morning of August 5 when he was asked to issue a whip asking all MPs to oppose government moves to repeal special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcate the state. Kalita quit, saying he could not issue such a whip because the national sentiment was in favour of J&K’s integration with the country.
Kalita has also been Assam Congress president in the past.
His Rajya Sabha term was to end in April 2020. Kalita resigned few days after another Congress MP from Rajya Sabha Sanjay Sinh quit from the party to join the BJP.
