New Delhi, August 13
The Ministry of Defence has asked the armed forces to give their recommendation on how to classify disability cases which are entitled for disability pension.
In June this year, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), in a circular, said income tax exemption will be available only to those armed forces personnel who have been invalided from service on account of bodily disability. The same exemption will not apply to those who retired with bodily injury.
Twice the Defence Ministry led by Rajnath Singh assured in Parliament that it would look into the matter of taxing pension of disabled soldiers. This happened as several veterans raised the matter that taxing disability pension would be a negative step.
Army Chief General Bipin Rawat today said, “We will give our recommendation from services. We will address the wrong…we always wanted that only genuinely disabled should get benefit.” Disability pension is graded as per the injury of the person. And that gradation further translates into quantum of disability pension. — TNS
