New Delhi, August 6
Amid deep divisions in the Congress over the party’s stand against abrogation of Article 370 and also Reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir, the party’s working committee met here late evening to debate a resolution on the matter.
The CWC assembled to discuss the issue at a time when Congress veteran Janardan Dwivedi, former CWC member Anil Shastri, party general secretary for west UP Jyotiraditya Scindia, former Congress MPs Deepender Hooda and Milind Deora, party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi and Congress MLA from Rae Bareli backed the government move to scrap Article 370.
Former J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, trashing support for government moves, said: “I don’t wish to say anything about people who don’t understand the history of the country and of Jammu and Kashmir.
The CWC passed a resolution expressing solidarity with J&K people over the “government move to end their special status and dismember them into a UT.” The resolution is likely to see dissenting notes.
Scindia said he supported the moves on Jammu and Kashmir. “I support the move on #JammuAndKashmir & #Ladakh and its full integration into union of India. Would have been better if constitutional process had been followed. No questions could have been raised then. Nevertheless, this is in our country’s interest and I support this (sic),” he tweeted.
Hooda said: “I have always maintained that Article 370 should be scrapped. It has no place in the 21st century. Abrogation of this Article is in the interest of national integrity and the people of Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral part of India. However, the onus of peaceful implementation of this transition in a trustworthy environment lies on the incumbent government.”
Mumbai Congress chief Milind Deora said it was “unfortunate” that Article 370 was being converted into a liberal vs conservative debate. “Parties should put aside ideological fixations,” he said.
