Komal Panchal (in pic) beat Sterling Blayke Dias of USA (4-4) in the 40kg category final of the Cadet World Wrestling Championships in Sofia. The 15-year-old daughter of a farm labourer from Patti Kalyana village of Samalkha in Panipat is the second female wrestler to win the gold after Sonam Malik. Komal beat Miu Obata of Japan 10-9 in the semifinals. Earlier, she blanked Zozan Akar of Turkey 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Haryana teen wins double gold in shooting meet
Young Adarsh Singh outclassed his rivals in the Sardar Sajjan Singh Sethi Memorial Masters shooting competition, winning gold in both the men’s senior and junior 25m rapid fire pistol event. The 17-year-old shot 584 to top the qualification rounds. The Haryana boy then won the senior final 27-26. He overcame a poor start when he had one out of five hits to edge out Army marksman Gurmeet. Punjab’s Anhad Jawanda bagged the bronze with a score of 22. In the junior category, Adarsh overcame Vijayveer Sidhu of Chandigarh 30-27. Haryana’s Ayush Sangwan won bronze with a score of 21.

Anirban Lahiri opened the Wyndham Championship with a bogey-free 3-under 67 and was placed tied-46th at the end of the opening round. Lahiri landed an eagle from 18 feet on the fifth, his 14th hole, besides a birdie on the second.

Bagan blank Sporting 2-0 in Durand Cup opener
Spaniard Salvo Chamorro hit a brace as Mohun Bagan kick-started the 129th Durand Cup with a 2-0 win over Mohammedan Sporting. Former Barcelona B forward Chamorro gave Bagan the early lead by heading home a free-kick by his compatriot Joseba Beitia. Chamorro doubled the lead 20 minutes later.
