Mumbai: The Bombay HC on Tuesday directed a ‘serial litigant’, who claimed he filed his pleas for society's betterment, to do some "real social work" like beach cleaning to prove his bona fides. The HC directed Rakesh Chavan, who had filed a PIL alleging illegal use of land by a private company, to approach beach cleanup crusader Afroz Shah on September 2 and participate in whatever work Shah gives him for a week. B’desh court wants ‘virgin’ off certificate 

Dhaka: The word “virgin” must be removed from Muslim marriage certificates in Bangladesh, the country’s top court has said, a landmark verdict after campaigners challenged the “humiliating and discriminatory” term. Under the South Asian country’s Muslim marriage laws, a bride has to select one of three options on the certificate — whether she is a Kumari (virgin), a widow or divorced. PTI

‘Rancho School’ wants actual name back 

Leh: Druk Padma Karpo School in Ladakh, popularly known as 'Rancho's School', is delighted about the fame the Aamir Khan-starrer "3 Idiots" has brought to it, but the 18-year-old institution does not want the Bollywood connect to overshadow its original identity and values. The local people still call it Druk Padma Karpo School and they take a lot of pride in the Buddhist tradition and philosophy with which it was created, principal Stanzin Kunzang said. PTI

IIT develops robot to lessen surgery pain

New Delhi: IIT-Madras researchers at have developed a "Spine Surgery Robot", an image guided robotic system for minimally invasive and open spine surgeries that are less painful and more affordable. The project, funded by HRD Ministry, is India's first robotic system for spinal surgery. PTI
