Conservation is the key to solve many problems that we face in todaAgy’s time. Architect Shikha Jain, who was present at M.N Sharma Memorial Lecture organised by the Chandigarh College of Architecture in collaboration with M.N Sharma Architectural Society, aims at restoring the excellence of the Government Museum & Art Gallery in Chandigarh.
She says, “Our team has conducted material testing and a thorough research of the museum such as tiles, floorings, paint pigments for more than a year now. We interacted with S.D Sharma and B.N. Goswamy to understand the history behind the architectural excellence of the modern era. Our findings are that lighting of the museum is in conflict with its architecture. Ratna Fabri, one of India’s earliest designers, however, did a commendable job in designing the interiors, but the natural sunlight from the glass does not reach the place where artefacts are kept. We will try to retain her essence while solving this problem.”
A renowned conservation architect and founder director of Dronah, a voluntary body, Shikha adds, “The museum will need an extension in five years to accommodate and also to complete the process of its restoration. Also, the rings and partitions have to go so that a walk-through can be created for the visitors to give an orientation of the museum.” A unique tradition of closing the museum every day by burning ‘lac’ on a stove and sealing the gate with it is culturally significant and Shikha says, “The essence and thought process of Le Corbusier’s plans and Ratna Fabri’s creative mind are unparalleled. We only intend to increase the longevity and its significance among the modern museums which are few.
Praising Chandigarhians, Shikha says, “The residents of Chandigarh are very responsible in preserving its timeless artscape and as it has been the laboratory for modern architecture, it is time they realised and brought the required changes in the landscape of Chandigarh but at the same time keeping the values intact.”
Surabhi Agarwal was awarded the M.N Sharma scholarship of Rs 20,000 getting the highest aggregate marks in the Bachelors of Architecture course from Chandigarh College of Architecture.
