A fortnight after a notification upgrading the Batala Municipal Committee to a corporation, committee chief Naresh Mahajan refuses to acknowledge the orders.
He has chosen not to vacate his office, claiming he is still the president, citing provisions of the Municipal Act, 1911. Two days ago, Executive Officer Bhupinder Singh locked the committee office. A livid Mahajan approached the DC and Batala SSP following which the office was unlocked. “The old MC house stands dissolved after the notification. I don’t understand why Mahajan is creating a ruckus. The functioning of the body has been hit. The provisions being cited by him are not applicable to a corporation,” pointed out Minister Tripat Bajwa’s aide.
“If at all a corporation exists, then there is no post of EO. I know who is supporting him,” said Mahajan.
