With the Election Commission announcing the schedule for the Vidhan Sabha byelections, the model code of conduct has come into effect in the 11 districts.
The seats which will go to polls on October 21 are Gangoh (Saharanpur), Rampur (Rampur), Iglas reserved (Aligarh), Lucknow Cantonment (Lucknow), Govindnagar (Kanpur), Manikpur (Chitrakoot), Pratapgarh (Pratapgarh), Zaidpur reserved (Barabanki), Jalalpur (Ambedkar nagar), Balha reserved (Bahraich) and Ghosi (Mau).
Of the Vidhan Sabha vacancies, the byelection for Hamirpur was declared earlier. The Tundla Assembly segment in Firozabad district is missing from the today’s schedule.
Among these segments, Rampur was with the Samajwadi Party as its nine-time Azam Khan MLA has now been elevated to the Lok Sabha. The BSP had just one sitting MLA Ritesh Pandey from Jalapur in Ambedkarnagar. The remaining seats were with the BJP.
As of now, the SP has announced its candidates for three seats- Maharaj Singh Dhangar for Tundla, a seat for which the EC has not announced the schedule. Other candidates are Kiran Bharti from Balha in Bahraich and Chaudhary Indrasen from Gangoh. The BSP has announced candidates for 11 seats. While the Congress has announced six candidates, the BJP is yet to declare its nominees. — TNS
Disqualified K’taka MLAs to seek stay on Bypolls
Bengaluru: By-elections to Assembly constituencies represented by 15 of 17 disqualified former Congress-JD(S) MLAs will be held on October 21 and results will be declared on October 24, Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer Sanjiv Kumar said. However, the disqualified legislators said they will be seeking a stay on the election process on Monday, as their petition challenging the disqualification is pending before the Supreme Court. PTI
