New Delhi, October 4
The CBI on Friday moved the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of anticipatory bail given to former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam.
It has challenged the October 1 Calcutta High Court order granting anticipatory bail to Kumar. The HC had said it was not an appropriate case for custodial interrogation.
The Saradha group of companies allegedly duped lakhs of people to the tune of Rs 2,500 crore, promising higher rates of return on their investments. He was a part of the special investigation team (SIT) set up by the West Bengal government to probe the scam. Later, the case was transferred to the CBI in 2014 by the Supreme Court.
The SC on February 5 restrained the CBI from taking any coercive action against Kumar who was directed to cooperate with the probe agency. — TNS
