Intolerance rising: Sonia

New Delhi, October 31

Congress president Sonia Gandhi today launched an indirect attack on the ruling BJP saying intolerance and violence were on the rise and the fundamental assumptions that guided the freedom struggle were being called into question.

She was speaking at the event held here for the presentation of the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration 2017-2018. This year’s award went to Uttrakhand’s Chandi Prasad Bhatt, an acclaimed environmentalist and Gandhian who has dedicated his life to the rejuvenation of the Alaknanda basin.

Remembering late PM Indira Gandhi on her 35th death anniversary today, Sonia said the late PM sacrificed her life for national integration.

“Unlike those in the ruling establishment now, she (Indira Gandhi) did not equate unity with uniformity. On the contrary, she was proud of India’s many diversities,” Sonia said in a swipe at the ruling BJP.

“Today, we see rising intolerance, rising violence. A skewed vision of our history and society is being imposed along with falsehood and unscientific ideas. All this is the antithesis of the liberal, secular and democratic foundations of our country,” she said.
