Open to joining Modi govt: JD-U

New Delhi, October 30

NDA’s ruling Bihar-centric ally JD-U, which had refused to join the Narendra Modi government in June, today pushed for a “proportionate representation” for the party, saying it was open to the idea of joining the government at the Centre.

Talking to mediapersons after JD-U’s national council meeting, party’s national spokesperson KC Tyagi said: “The party will have no hesitation if there is an offer from the BJP.” “The BJP should offer proportional representation to JD-U in the Union Council of Ministers,” said Tyagi in response to a question on what kind of offer would be proper for his party. The council was addressed by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, who has been elected party president for a second term.

The BJP should adjust the JD-U at the Centre, just as Kumar had given the saffron party a proportionate representation in the state government, said Tyagi.

Tyagi noted the mandate of the 2015 Bihar Assembly poll was “against” the BJP, but Kumar conceded to it the post of Deputy Chief Minister besides sharing ministerial berths. He, however, added his party was not imposing any conditions on the BJP over the issue of Cabinet berths.

The JD-U had declined joining the Council of Ministers at the Centre as it was reportedly unhappy with the BJP offering one ministerial berth to his party, which had contested 2019 LS poll in Bihar in alliance with the BJP and LJP. The JD-U had bagged 16 seats and the BJP 17.

Tyagi asserted the JD-U alliance with the BJP in Bihar was stable and would contest the next Assembly elections together. Addressing the council, Kumar batted for need for probity in political and public life and made out a case for making “seven social sins” guide posts for political campaigns.  — TNS
