The Telangana Police have made it compulsory to link its “Hawk-Eye” app containing an “emergency button” to every company or individual offering Internet-based cab service.
“It’s a distress button for female riders and will be mandatory for cab service providers to integrate it with their mobile application,” state DGP M Mahender Reddy has announced.
The state police chief said, “When a commuter in distress presses the button, the message will be transmitted to Telangana police’s Hawk-Eye app through a back-end operational workflow that will pass on location and other details of the cab to the police,” Reddy said highlighting that the late-hour working conditions in the IT and other service industries necessitated such an app-based facility to ensure security of women.
The emergency button will be integrated in such a way as to alert police patrol system. Once the information is received in the control room, immediate intimation will be sent to the nearby patrol, police SHO concerned, divisional ACP and zonal DCP in addition to the control room of cab operators, besides the registered family members and friends of the commuter.
According to the state DGP, the move will not only make the environment safe and secure for the commuters, but it will also add to their confidence. The process of integrating police patrols with passenger cabs has been achieved for Ola, Tora and Move-in Sync and 112 (Shout App developed by the Ministry of Home Affairs).
The police have asked all providers of cab services to get their mobile app integrated with police patrols for enhancing the safety of the commuters. “Once the information is received, the police will be able to respond immediately to reach the commuter in distress by continuously tracking the movement of the vehicle on the geo-tagged map,” the DGP said.
