On the 37th day of hearing of the Ayodhya land dispute, the Supreme Court on Friday said it would wind up by October 17 hearing on cross-appeals challenging the Allahabad High Court verdict equally dividing the disputed land between Ram Lalla, Nirmohi Akhara and Sunni Wakf Board.

The new scheduled announced by a five-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi advances the date for completion of arguments by a day as it had earlier asked parties to complete their arguments by October 18.

“It will be a miracle to write verdict in four weeks,” the Bench, which has been hearing Ram Janmbhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute since August 6, said on September 30. It’s important to adhere to the schedule as in view of the fact that CJI Gogoi is scheduled to retire on November 17. The Bench said Muslim parties should complete their arguments on October 14 and then two days would be given to the Hindu side for their rejoinders.

October 17 would be the last day for winding up the hearing when all the parties will have to make final arguments about the relief would like seek and how they would like to mould their respective relief.

The Bench has been hearing the case for an extra hour during this week and didn’t permit any advocate to raise any new issue or evidence and exceed the allotted time slot. The Bench will resume hearing on October 14.
