New Delhi, November 28
Within the next few days, the Union Government is set to appoint the next Chief of the Indian Army and separately the country’s first four-star Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).
The present incumbent, General Bipin Rawat, retires on December 31. The three officers in contention for the post are Vice-Chief Lt Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane, Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Ranbir Singh and Southern Army Commander Lt Gen SK Saini. Their names are on the panel sent to the PM-headed Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
The government is considering appointing General Rawat as the first CDS. The four-star General appointed as CDS will enjoy the rights of ‘first among equals’. — TNS
