New Delhi, November 10
A day after Governor BS Koshyari invited the BJP to form the government in Maharasthra, the saffron party today said it would not “insult” the mandate.
While the Governor’s invite to the BJP was not surprising, given that it is the single largest party with 105 MLAs in the 288-member Assembly, the unwillingness of the party to jump at the chance has come as a surprise. For, in Goa and Manipur, the BJP rode roughshod over the single largest parties and formed the governments.
The reason behind this calculative decision is simple.
While the saffron party is aware that it will not be able to prove the majority without the help of the Sena, a bigger embarrassment would have been not being able to elect a Speaker of its choice.
Normally, after the members are administered the oath, election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker takes place on the same day. So even if it was given the time to prove its majority, not having its own Speaker would have made the exercise quite pointless, a reason it decided to let the others try.
