Manavjit wins trap gold

A seasoned pro, Manavjit Singh Sandhu is not known to make his angst or disgust public. But for the past two days, the 43-year-old trap shooter had made a personal mission to finish high on the podium.

Sandhu was languishing mid-table after shooting 22 in Round 2 of the qualification, which made a few shooters question whether the former world champion would be able to make it to the core group of trap shooters of the country. Sandhu was fired up by this won the trap gold at the National Championships by shooting down 42 of the 50 targets in the final today.

Sandhu’s statemate Vishavdev Singh Sidhu, who is part of the junior coaching staff, finished second on 41, while India international Kynan Chenai finished third by hitting 32 targets.

“It is good to give it back sometimes,” Sandhu told The Tribune after the final.

Earlier, Sandhu was involved in a seven-man shoot-off to qualify for the final after finishing with 120 in qualification.

Sandhu, Vishavdev, Yuvraj Mahajan, Prithviraj Tondaiman and Jungsher Virk made the cut for the final. The 43-year-old Sandhu made a disastrous start in the final as he dropped two of the first three targets to slip to sixth, but he recovered well to stay afloat. Chenai was the early pace-setter in the final but missed a few targets to slide to third.
