New Delhi, November 15
While Delhi choked, a high-level Parliamentary panel meeting, called to discuss the prevailing air pollution in the region, had to be cancelled as several MPs, including BJP’s Gautam Gambhir, and top officials skipped it. Only four of the 29 MPs on the panel and a few officials turned up for the meeting that was called by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Urban Development, sources said.
Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said he would investigate and take necessary action. MPs who were present included chairperson Jagdambika Pal, Hussain Masoodi, CR Patil and Sanjay Singh. Sources said the committee had taken strong objection to the absence and the matter would also be taken up with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
Trolled badly, Gambhir, who is currently in Indore as a commentator for the India versus Bangladesh cricket match, said, “My work will speak for itself.” He said that if abusing him helped bring down Delhi’s pollution, AAP was free to do so.
AAP has raised questions on Gambhir’s seriousness over pollution. Following flak after several of BJP MPs and key environment ministry officials were found missing from a crucial meeting on air pollution, the Environment Ministry issued a statement saying that a representation was sought from the ministry on the meeting by the Parliament’s Standing Committee on Urban Development.
“The ministry was represented by Deputy Secretary and also from Central Pollution Control Board. The Joint Secretary could not attend as she was to appear for an important matter in Supreme Court,” the official spokesperson said.
