Rs100 crore sanctioned for women help desks

New Delhi, December 5

Amid widespread outrage over recent heinous crimes against women in Hyderabad and Unnao in Uttar Pradesh, the government today announced sanctioning of Rs 100 crore from Nirbhaya Fund for setting up and strengthening of women help desks in police stations.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), in a statement issued late in the evening, said the scheme would be implemented by the state governments and administration of the Union Territories.

“Women help desks will focus on making the police stations more women-friendly and approachable as they will be the first and single point of contact for any woman walking into a police station. Essentially, lady police officers will be deployed at the help desks,” the MHA stated.

The amount will also be spent on training the officials of the women help desk to make them sensitive towards women, it said, adding these help desks will have enlisted panel of experts, like lawyers, psychologists and NGOs to facilitate legal aid, counselling, shelter, rehabilitation and training. — TNS
