Over the years, biopics have become an important part of Bollywood. Apart from entertaining, these real-life stories are a great source of inspiration. Moreover, for movie lovers, it’s interesting to see how perfectly a person’s life gets portrayed on the silver screen. While this year started with biopics such as Thackeray, The Accidental Prime Minster and Manikarnika, there are 14 more biopics that are lined up for release in 2019-20. Here’s a quick check:
Revolutionary leader: Jayalalithaa
It was Kangana’s birthday on Saturday and the actress gave fans a return gift by announcing her next film, which is a biopic on actress-turned-politician Jayalalithaa. Fondly referred to as ‘Puratchi Thalaivi’, which means ‘Revolutionary Leader’, Jayalalithaa is one of the most-loved politicians. Kangana shares, “Jayalalithaa ji is one of the biggest female success stories of this century. She was a superstar and went on to become an iconic politician. It’s a great concept for mainstream film and I am honoured to be a part of this mega project.”
Big salute: Captain Vikram Batra
Sidharth Malhotra will be playing the role of Captain Vikram Batra, the Kargil War hero who bravely fought and gave up his life with a smile. From Vikram Batra’s school days in Chandigarh, to his joining the Indian Military Academy, to him leading 13 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles as Captain, the film tells the story of this officer who was honoured with the Param Veer Chakra posthumously.
Ball game: Syed Abdul Rahman
Ajay Devgn will soon be seen in a biopic on Syed Abdul Rahim, famous Indian footballer. The film is being directed by Amit Sharma and produced by Zee Studios, Boney Kapoor, Akash Chawla and Joy Sengupta. It traces the life journey of Syed Abdul Rahim, who was responsible for taking sports to a new height in India.
Gold finger: Abhinav Bindra
Indian Olympic star, Abhinav Bindra's biopic is soon to be made and Anil Kapoor's son, Harshvardhan Kapoor, will play the lead role in it. Interestingly, Anil Kapoor is also a part of this film. This will be first film together for real-life father-son duo. Anil will play Abhinav Bindra's father Apjit Bindra in the film.
Space story: Rakesh Sharma
Tentatively titled Salute, a biopic on India's first astronaut Rakesh Sharma has been making headlines since a long time. After Aamir Khan backed out from this film, Shah Rukh Khan was said to have signed up. However, now SRK is also out and reports suggest Ranbir Kapoor might get signed up soon. The film is expected to release next year.
Plus factor: Anand Kumar
Super 30 is a biopic of mathematician Anand Kumar. He is famous for teaching underprivileged students and coaching them for JEE exams for free. Almost all his students clear JEE every year. Anand Kumar's role is being played by Hrithik Roshan and after much delay; the film is now set to release on July 26, 2019.
Net gain: Saina Nehwal
Fans will soon be able to see the inspiring story of their favourite badminton player Saina Nehwal on silver screen. Earlier Shraddha Kapoor was supposed to play the lead, however, she moved out of the film due to date issues. Now, Parineeti Chopra has been signed up for the role. She will be going through intensive training before starting the shoot.
Let peace be: Kailash Satyarthi
Boman Irani will play the role of Kailash Satyarthi, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 and has protected the rights of more than 83,000 children from 144 countries. The film, titled Jhalki, is about a little girl looking for her brother who went missing while working as a child labourer.
Rags to riches: Gulshan Kumar
Based on the life of T-Series’ founder Gulshan Kumar, who changed the face of Indian music industry beginning in 1980s, the film titled Mogul traces Gulshan’s rags-to-riches story till the time he was shot dead outside a temple in Mumbai in 1997. Earlier Akshay Kumar was announced as the lead, however, the actor backed out and Aamir Khan stepped in.
Political field: PM Narendra Modi
Vivek Oberoi will be seen in and as Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his biopic. The film, which portrays all the different phases of PM Modi’s life, is set to hit the screens on April 5, ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Daring martyr: Udham Singh
Vicky Kaushal has been roped-in to play the lead in Shoojit Sircar's biopic on Udham Singh. It is the story of a daring martyr who assassinated Michael O' Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab in pre-Independence India, to avenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919. Singh was subsequently tried, convicted of murder and hanged in July 1940.
Down south: Shakeela
Richa Chadha will soon be seen in and as Shakeela, one of the most famous actresses of the Malayalam film industry. The film, helmed by director Indrajit Lankesh, is set to release in June 2019.
Flying high: Gunjan Saxena
Janhvi Kapoor is all set to play the first woman IAF pilot Gunjan Saxena. The shoot of the film is underway currently. A picture of Janhvi as the pilot who evacuated injured soldiers from Kargil in 1999 somehow made its way to the net and went viral. This will be Janhvi’s second film after Dhadak and looks quite promising.
Noble cause: Laxmi Aggarwal
Meghna Gulzar is making a film on acid attack survivor Laxmi Aggarwal. And, Deepika Padukone will be playing Laxmi in the film titled Chappak. Meghna recently shared pictures of the team from script-reading sessions. The film has now gone on the floor.
