Patna: Mumbai: With infighting in the Mumbai unit of the Congress getting worse, the party on Monday appointed former Union Minister Milind Deora as Mumbai Regional Congress Committee chief, replacing Sanjay Nirupam, who had been at loggerheads with senior party leaders in the state. The party has, however, allowed Nirupam to switch from the Mumbai North Lok Sabha seat, from where he lost in 2014, to the Mumbai North-West seat. Infighting had taken a turn for the worse recently with Deora announcing that he would not contest the LS polls. However, with Nirupam's opponents getting more vocal, the party leadership decided to effect a change in the city, sources said. tns
Former JD(U) MP quits over ticket denial
Patna: Kailash Baitha, district president of Janata Dal (United) of Valmiki Nagar, on Monday resigned from the party after being denied a ticket for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The party has fielded Baidyanath Mahato from the constituency. The mahagathbandhan is yet to announce a candidate to challenge Mahato. BJP’s Satish Chandra Dubey overwhelmingly defeated his Congress rival Purnmasi Ram in 2014 by 1,17,744 votes. Mahato had stood third with less than 1 lakh votes. Baitha, who won Brahmins-dominated Valmiki Nagar in 2004, appeared sure that he would again be fielded after it fell into JD-U quota under seat-sharing formula of NDA. “The party overlooked workers' feedback and fielded a new candidate from Valmiki Nagar. At such a juncture, it is unwise to stay,” Baitha said. tns
