Ranchi, March 28
Noted economist Jean Dreze was detained in Jharkhand’s Garwah district today for allegedly holding a public meeting without permission. He was later released.
The Belgium-born economist and activi-st, now an Indian citizen, and Vivek Gupta, an activist, were taken into preventive custody.
Dreze, a member of the National Advisory Council during the UPA regime, and Gupta were released after investigation. Police said organising a public meeting without permission amounts to violation of the code of conduct.
Shocking beyond words!

Jean Dreze is a saint-economist, a potential Nobel awardee who lived in slums, written and done more for the poor than any economist, shunned all power and glory, took up Indian citizenship, is a pacifist.
Nothing can be more shameful than arresting him. https://t.co/KagTeBhFV8
“The organisers did not provide the name of the main speaker. So permission was denied,” SDO Kamleshwar Narayan said.
Dreze said: “Understanding of democracy is shrinking. Gradually, all freedom’s being curbed.” Dreze had helped draft the food law. — Agencies
