In UP, Nishad Party breaks away from grand alliance

Lucknow: In a major setback to the SP-BSP-RLD alliance in UP, the Nishad Party on Friday announced to go its own way and met CM Yogi Adityanath, triggering speculation that it may become an ally of the ruling BJP. According to sources, the BJP has negotiated to make the Nishad Party break away from the mahagatbandhan in exchange for the Gorakhpur and Jaunpur Lok Sabha seats. Sitting Gorakhpur MP Praveen Nishad is expected to be the candidate once again from Gorakhpur as a BJP-supported candidate. Jaunpur's former MP mafia-turned-politician Dhnanjay Singh is expected to be the Nishad party candidate from Jaunpur. Nishad Party chief Sanjay Nishad said he would fight elections independently and would explore other options as well. tns

Maharashtra politicians’ distilleries under EC scanner

Mumbai: More than a hundred distilleries, most of which are owned by Maharashtra's politicians, are under the scanner of the Election Commission for distribution of liquor to voters and party workers on the eve of the Lok Sabha elections. Most of these distilleries based in western Maharashtra are attached to sugar factories from where molasses is sourced to produce liquor. Maharashtra's Excise Department has asked all distilleries to install high definition CCTV cameras to keep an eye on the production and movement of liquor. tns
