Manu, Saurabh strike gold as India dominate

New Delhi, March 29

Pistol shooters Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary clinched a gold each, their second in the competition, as India continued to dominate the Asian Airgun Championships in Taoyuan, Chinese Taipei.

Manu won the women’s 10m Air Pistol title on Day 3 of competition while Chaudhary bagged the team gold in the men’s event. Abhishek Verma won the individual silver in the men’s 10m Air Pistol, rounding off a profitable day for himself after the disappointments in the mixed events. The women’s pistol team also won the bronze to bolster India’s tally to five gold, three silver and one bronze.

Manu scored 575 points out of 600 to qualify in the second place for the final. In the final, she was involved in a pitched battle with Shing Ho Ching of Hong Kong for most part of the 24-shot final before finishing stronger in the end stages. She finished with 239 points against Shing’s 237.9. UAE’s Wafa Alali bagged the bronze while Shri Nivetha of India finished sixth. In the men’s event, all three Indians in the field made the final. Chaudhary topped in qualification with 587 points, Ravinder was fourth with 578. Verma, in fact, was the lowest-ranked Indian among the eight qualifiers, fifth with 577, but was the only one to land a medal. Verma shot 240.7 but lost out on gold to South Korea’s Mose Kim by 0.2 of a point.

Chaudhary (198.8) finished fourth after being pipped to the bronze by Taehwan Lee of South Korea in a shoot-off. Ravinder ended up seventh with 136.3 points. The trio, though, picked up the team gold with a total of 1742 points, a clear 12 points ahead of the Koreans. — PTI
