Warner-Bairstow trump Sanju ton

HYDERABAD, March 29

Sanju Samson's second IPL ton was overshadowed by David Warner's blistering fifty as Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Rajasthan Royals by five wickets to register their first win in the ongoing edition of the IPL.

Chasing a mammoth 199-run target, Warner set up the platform for Sunrisers with a breezy 69 off 37 balls and together with Jonny Bairstow (45) added a century stand for the opening wicket to spoil Rajasthan's day. Sunrisers needed a quick start to eclipse Rajasthan's imposing 198/2 and Warner and Bairstow just provided that to give the impetus for the rest of the batsmen to follow as the hosts chased down the target in 19 overs.

Warner went hammer and tongs from the beginning and struck fours and sixes at will to propel Sunrisers to 54/0 after five overs. He shared 110 runs in just 58 balls for the opening stand with Bairstow. But just when it seemed Warner would run away with the game, Ben Stokes foxed him with a perfect short ball as he holed out to Dhawal Kulkarni at deep fine-leg. It could have been a double blow for Sunrisers but Kulkarni dropped Bairstow a ball later. Kulkarni made up for his mistake in the last ball of the next over, latching on to a fine catch at long-off to send Bairstow packing. Skipper Kane Williamson (14) and Vijay Shankar (35) played aggressively to bring down the target within reach, but three quick wickets, that too in consecutive balls by Shreyas Gopal, in the 16th over, changed the complexion of the game. Yusuf Pathan (16*) and Rashid Khan (15*) played sensibly to reach the target with ease.  — PTI

Nothing adverse in referee’s report on umpiring howler

New Delhi: BCCI match referee Manu Nayyar has not submitted an adverse report against umpires Sundaram Ravi and C Nandan for their howlers during the IPL game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians, an official said. S Ravi had failed to spot a no-ball by Lasith Malinga on the last ball of the last over during RCB’s six-run loss to Mumbai Indians last night. Due to this, RCB lost one run and a free-hit, and thus a chance to win the game. Later, RCB skipper Virat Kohli had a word with the umpire, and also spoke about the incident in a post-match interview, saying that it was not a “club-level game” and the umpires “should have been more sharp.” “Nayyar’s report is also not very critical,” an IPL official said. “Virat was upset and told Ravi that this no-ball cost them dearly. Ravi expressed his regret and admitted that he didn’t take the right decision at that moment.” The official rubbished reports that Kohli had barged into Nayyar’s room to express his anger against Ravi. Ravi is unlikely to be sanctioned due to the lack of officials with international experience on the BCCI roster. Currently, there are only 11 Indian umpires allotted for on-field and TV duty for 56 IPL games. This means while Ravi might get negative marking from the match referee, BCCI can hardly take any measures beyond that. Ravi is the only Indian in the ICC’s Elite Panel of umpires. — PTI
