Being a judge re-inspires me: Katy Perry

Recent Post

Pop sensation Katy Perry loves being part of the American Idol journey. One of the judges, on the show, along with Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, she finds playing this part beautiful. “It just really reminds me of my own process. It re-inspires me,” says the singer labelling it a great American dream come true.

Katy speaks about her expectations from the show that airs exclusively on Zee Café, every weekend at 9 pm, her relation with other judges and more…

How has been your journey with American Idol?

It’s been great. Well, I was really proud of the last season, especially when we got to the top 10. It was so diverse. It was so unique. There weren’t just, you know, people with good voices. There were great people with personalities that had star power.

What qualities are you looking for in the next idol?

Of course, it’s a singing competition if you can’t sing, you can’t be on this competition. But it’s not just that. You know, it’s not like American singer. It’s the idol. And for the idol factor, you’ve got to have so many different things going for you and that’s what I’m always going to look for.

Who is a true ‘idol’ from your point of view?

Someone who stands out! I think it is talent, personality and story, you know. And in that, personality is presentation. Some people can turn a little bit sour or like change when they come to Hollywood and they lose that vulnerability. They lose that relatability. I think it’s just people that they feel really connected to.

How well do you bond with Luke and Richie?

Lionel, Luke and I have all grown really as a family. I mean, they feel like my brother and my uncle. We are so relaxed with each other and maybe that’s a bad thing sometimes. But we have such a great chemistry, all three of us. We play on each other’s strengths. I think we got used to an incredible top 10 on the first season. And so, we’re not really giving anyone the benefit of the doubt, I guess, more so.

How do you guide the contestants?

I try to be able to pay it forward by caring. I care so much about these kids. And being a real mentor, I give them advice that they can hopefully take and really apply so that they can win. I mean, I’m just so encouraged by these kids and it makes me feel like a good person while doing it, so I love it.
