Lal Krishna Advani
A founder member of the BJP, he served as Deputy PM from 2002 to 2004 under AB Vajpayee and was Home Minister in the BJP-led NDA govt from 1998 to 2004. Not allotted Gandhinagar ticket this time.
Murli Manohar Joshi
Former BJP president and Kanpur MP, he was asked not to contest the 2019 elections. He had vacated his seat of Varanasi for PM Narendra Modi in 2014. He was allotted Kanpur instead.
Sumitra Mahajan
Sixteenth Speaker, elected to the Lok Sabha for the eighth time in a row (from Indore), one of three members to do so and the longest-serving woman member. Has opted out of contest this time.
Uma Bharti
Union Minister, representing the Jhansi seat in Parliament, appointed party vice-president after she decided not to contest the polls. She was once party’s CM-candidate in Madhya Pradesh.
Sushma Swaraj
Sitting Vidisha MP and currently Foreign Minister, she is the second woman to hold the office after Indira Gandhi. A seven-time MP, she became the youngest Cabinet minister in Haryana in 1977. Won’t contest.
Kariya Munda
The sitting Khunti MP served as Deputy Speaker of the 15th Lok Sabha. He has served as minister at the Centre several times, including in governments headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Not in race now.
Shanta Kumar
The sitting Kangra MP also served as the Chief Minister of HP and Cabinet Minister at the Centre. He began his political career in 1963, when he was elected as a panch. The BJP has not allotted him ticket.
BC Khanduri
The sitting Pauri Garhwal MP is a retired Major General. The two-time CM of Uttarakhand also served as minister in the Vajpayee govt. He won the last Lok Sabha election with 4 lakh votes. Won’t contest.
Bhagat Singh Koshyari
The sitting Nainital-Bhagat Singh Nagar MP served as national vice-president and also as the first state president of the BJP in Uttarakhand. He was CM of Uttarakhand from 2001 to 2002. Not given ticket.
