‘Yogi’ first Indian to win Japan civic polls

TOKYO: A 41-year-old Indian-origin Japanese, who goes by the nickname “Yogi”, has been elected to Tokyo’s Edogawa Ward Assembly, becoming the first Indian to win an election in Japan. Puranik Yogendra, a naturalised Japanese, secured 6,477 votes, the fifth highest of the 2,26,561 valid ballots cast, in the April 21 poll, part of unified local elections held across Japan, the Asahi Shimbun reported. “I want to be a bridge between Japanese and foreigners,” said Yogi, who was backed by the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan. ‘Transwoman a bride under Hindu Marriage Act’

Madurai: In a key ruling, the Madras High Court Bench has held that as per the Hindu Marriage Act, a transsexual is also a “bride” and the term would not necessarily refer only to a woman. Justice GR Swaminathan gave the ruling on a petition filed by a man and a transwoman who approached the court after officials refused to register their marriage held in Tuticorin last October. The judge said the word ‘bride’ could not have a static or immutable meaning and would have to include a transwoman. PTI

NCW weekly meeting for wives deserted by NRIs 

London: The NCW would hold walk-in meetings every week with women who have been abandoned by their NRI husbands to hear their grievances. National Commission for Women chairperson Rekha Sharma said the meetings would be held every Monday from 3-4 pm to hear the grievances of the complainants who are suffering in cases of NRI marriages. The meetings would help in ensuring that their matter is heard in person and all assistance required is provided promptly, she added. PTI

Indian-origin boy is UK’s youngest accountant 

London: A 15-year-old Indian-origin boy has been lauded as Britain’s youngest accountant after setting up a accountancy firm while still at school. Ranveer Singh Sandhu, based in south London, has set himself a goal of becoming a millionaire by the time he turns 25. He says he knew from a very early age that he wanted to become an accountant to help young entrepreneurs set up their businesses. He charges between £12 to £15 per hour for his services and boasts of 10 paying clients. PTI
