You’ve heard of acrylics, probably tried press-on nails and definitely done a gel manicure at least once in your life. So, after combining the best traits about each of these nail treatments into one service, what we get is nail extensions. They are made from the same gel that gel polish is made of, add length to your regular nails like a press-on, and are as strong and long-lasting as acrylics, but without the powder or the harsh chemicals.
“Nail extension is both a fad and a requirement based product now, manicured hands are considered as a part of being classy. The trend is varied ranging from neon colour to chromes,” says Harkiran Singha, the co-owner of a nail salon in Chandigarh.
Nail extension comes in a variety of gel tips in different sizes and widths, so you can pick which gel nail tip best suits your nails. While they do come in seven different shapes — square, round, or stiletto — you can cut and shape them the way you want.
Kiran Dhillon, a Cuccio trained nail expert who currently runs her own Art Glam studio in Chandigarh, says, “Nail extensions are not a fad anymore. Once people start there is no going back. Nudes, sunshine yellow, sky blue and metallic are in, whereas nail art is much personalised.”
Here’s how it works
If you’re getting nail art, your artist will decorate your tips, and then your nails are sealed with a gel top coat. If you’re looking to get a fresh set of extensions, prepare to spend at least one hour in the salon.
Your gel nail extensions can last up to three weeks, it probably should last you as long as a gel manicure would, depending on your natural nail growth. The extensions are extremely durable and won’t come off with foils and acetone. To remove them you need to completely break through the top seal which requires a professional nail drill. If you don’t want to remove your gels too soon so to avoid weakening of the nail let them grow out or get a fill.
Another plus?
If you’re using regular nail polish to paint your gel nail extensions, you can remove and repaint them as much as you want without having to worry about getting them filled, like acrylics. You can maintain the life of your gel extensions at home by cutting and shaping them as they grow out.
But what people love the most about gel nail extensions are how natural they look. This is because you’re able to shape them the way you want and make them as thin as your real nails. They feel strong, durable, are thinner and look more natural. Aftercare is very important, including cleanliness and avoiding breakage.
Shaurya Sodhi from Chandigarh-based Liquid Glam Studio says, “French manicure is never out of fashion and is a safe pick. Chromes are the pick of the season and are available in all kinds of colours from ombres to whites.”
Hardeep Mahkrok a nail expert based in Tricity says, “Pastels, bows, glitters and flowers are a hit these days when it comes to nail art.”
