Mumbai, May 17
A special NIA court today ordered Pragya Singh Thakur and six other co-accused in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case to appear before it once a week.
Justice Vinod Padalkar ordered Thakur, former military intelligence officer Lt Col Prasad Purohit, Major Ramesh Upadhyay (rtd), Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dwivedi, Sudhakar Chaturvedi and Sameer Kulkarni to be present for the next hearing on May 20. All the accused in the case are out on bail.
The judge also noted that exemption from appearance in the court without adequate cause would not be granted. Charges have already been framed against all accused, including Thakur — the BJP’s Bhopal candidate. They have been charged with terror activities, criminal conspiracy and murder, among others.
Six persons were killed and more than 100 others injured after an IED went off near a mosque in Malegaon in Maharashtra on September 29, 2008.
Meanwhile, the special court today rejected an application filed by the father of one of the blast victims. In his plea, Nisar Ahmed Sayyed Bilal, whose son Sayyed Azhar died in the blasts, wanted the court to direct the Maharashtra ATS to direct the NIA in the matter.
