Mumbai, May 17

Bowing to pressure by the Maratha community, the Maharashtra Cabinet today decided to promulgate an ordinance to overcome a Supreme Court order barring quota for the community in post-graduate medical courses in the academic year starting next month.

The state Cabinet decided that the ordinance would allow reservation under the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Reservation Act, 2018, from the academic year starting June although the admission process had started before the introduction of the quota.

State government sources said the Law Department was in the process of drafting the ordinance that might be promulgated by the weekend.

Around 200 students belonging to the Maratha community who were granted admission for post-graduate medical courses under the SEBC quota stand to lose their seats after the SC ruled the quota illegal for the academic year starting next month.

Students from the General Category had moved the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court against the SEBC quota on the grounds that the admission process for post-graduate medical courses had begun well before the SEBC quota was introduced. The SC had also upheld the decision of the Nagpur Bench and struck down the admission of 190 students.

Meanwhile, members of the Maratha community who are protesting said the protests would continue till the students were actually admitted for the post-graduate courses.
