Have feet, will draw

Manpriya Singh

More than being rigorous, or even effective, a workout needs to be fun. Precisely the reason that made all the possible dance- based workouts popular. Bhangra, Zumba, you name it. Joining in is Bokwa, one of the recent workouts wherein you get to draw alphabets and numbers with your feet while shimmying to some African beats. On paper, it sounds fun. In practice, let’s find out.

Let’s talk about: Bokwa
Know thy workout

The workout already has a lot of the right ingredients in place. High voltage music, easy moves, instructor-led format and affinity to be conducted in groups.

“It’s a complete workout, which involves cardio and aerobics because you are making letters and alphabets with your feet on the floor while the music plays in the background. It involves mind training because you have to concentrate on what steps you are taking, for instance you are making an E.F.G. In the end there is a section that involves stretching and breathing exercises,” shares Neelam Garg, Chandigarh-based certified Bokwa trainer.

“I got my certification three years from the only US-based company that’s allowed to certify Bokwa trainers and I have been trying to make it popular in the city ever since.”

Fad or here to stay?

On the face of it, it sounds like the biggest competitor to Zumba but assures Neelam, “It’s a different form of workout and the one that is a complete package. It involves one’s mind and complete body.” She adds, “The idea is to first stimulate the mind and then calm it down while your body is kept in sync with the mind at all stages of the workout.”

Who all can do it?

Anyone from the age of six to 60. “The only prerequisite is that one should know all the letters, so one can ideally start from six and go on until any age.” She adds, “Although we tailor the tempo and the steps of the exercises as per age-group. For instance the youngsters are encouraged to jump while not the elderly.”

For the Bokwa beginners

In this the knees are used a lot. So, we first check for the knee strength of the person wanting to do Bokwa. For the elderly, it is advisable not to jump.
