Lucknow, May 22
Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports, the National Human Rights Commission today issued a notice to the UP Director General of Police in connection with the custodial death of a man in Kannauj on May 20.
The NHRC has asked the UP DGP to get a thorough inquiry conducted into the incident by an officer not below the rank of Superintendent of Police posted in some other district and submit a detailed report to it. The probe report should also mention the status of the criminal case registered against the offending police personnel or any other public servant in four weeks.
A man had died in Kannauj police custody, allegedly after being brutally thrashed by policemen. A case against three police personnel has been registered.
The NHRC said, “It appears the police acted in a cruel manner amounting to violation of human rights of the victim. The police personnel have failed to perform their lawful duty as instead of providing lawful protection to the man in their custody, they abused their power.”
The commission has also sought information about any relief extended to the family of the deceased so far. — TNS
