Phase VI: 59 seats up for grabs

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 11

All 10 Haryana and seven Delhi Lok Sabha segments will vote tomorrow in the sixth phase polling for 59 parliamentary constituencies, including in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh.

The Delhi election poses a major challenge to the fledgling Aam Aadmi Party that entered electoral politics in 2013 with the state elections in the national capital.

At test tomorrow are the reputations of AAP national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his predecessor in Delhi and incumbent state Congress chief Sheila Dikshit.

The Congress, too, is fighting for survival in Delhi, having lost its support base to AAP in the 2013 and then 2015 state elections.  In 2015, the Congress could not open its account in the 70-member Delhi Assembly.

Another major contest tomorrow is in Bhopal, where Congress veteran and former Madhya Pradesh CM Digvijay Singh is challenging BJP’s Sadhvi Pragya.

For Singh, it’s a do-or-die battle as he seeks to end a self-imposed political exile.

In Delhi, all seven seats are presently held by the BJP.

Overall, out of 59 seats in the sixth phase tomorrow, 44 seats are with the BJP.
