Record haul of narcotic chemical from IPS officer’s house; 3 held

New Delhi/Noida, May 11

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) today claimed to have seized record 1,800-kg pseudoephedrine from a house in Greater Noida and arrested three foreigners. The estimated value of the seized chemical, along with 2-kg cocaine, is Rs 25 crore, sources said.

The house belongs to IPS officer DPN Pandey, posted in Lucknow, who said he was “shocked and distressed” at the recovery. He claimed he had rented out his place through a property dealer.

The NCB made the country’s biggest-ever haul of the narcotics chemical kept outside factory premises after grilling a South African woman who was arrested on May 9 from Delhi’s IGI Airport for allegedly carrying 24.7 kg of pseudoephedrine.

A Nigerian man and a woman besides the South African have been arrested under relevant sections of the NDPS Act.

Pseudoephedrine is a precursor used for the manufacture of drug methamphetamine used in Europe and South East Asia. The Noida police said the foreigners had not got themselves verified from the local police. “A probe would be carried out,” said Gautam Buddh Nagar SSP Vaibhav Krishna.

Pandey, an SP in Economic Offences Wing, claimed his tenants had not paid rent for about a year as also Rs 2.73 lakh in power bills. — PTI
